Expansion underscores Michigan’s leadership position in automotive manufacturing
LANSING, Mich. – Michigan continues to demonstrate its leadership in automotive manufacturing as Mitchell Plastics, a Tier 1 automotive supplier, today announced plans to establish a facility in Sterling Heights and create 122 jobs with support from the Michigan Strategic Fund.
The project is expected to generate more than $20.5 million in total investment.
“Mitchell Plastics’ expansion in Michigan rather than other locations means well-paying jobs for Michigan residents and underscores the strength of the talent in the state’s automotive sector,” said Steve Arwood, CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, which administers incentives and programs on behalf of MSF. “This decision by Mitchell Plastics to invest here offers further evidence of Michigan’s leadership in the automotive industry and our commitment to helping companies grow and generate new jobs for our residents.”
Ultra Manufacturing (USA) Inc. dba Mitchell Plastics is a Tier 1 supplier of automotive interior mechanisms and decorative components and provides full service concept, design, development, testing and manufacturing. The company has experienced rapid growth over the last five years and currently has 2,200 employees throughout Ontario, Alabama, Indiana, Michigan, Germany, and Mexico.
The company plans to construct a 200,000 square foot manufacturing facility in the city of Sterling Heights for the production of automotive interior parts. The project will generate a total capital investment of more than $20.5 million and initially create 122 jobs, resulting in a $427,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant. Michigan was chosen over competing sites in Ontario and Indiana.
The city of Sterling Heights is supporting the project in the form of property tax abatement.
“A company of this caliber moving to Sterling Heights speaks volumes about our City and its viability for manufacturers,” said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael C. Taylor. “Not only do we offer a strong workforce, but our low taxes and helpful staff at City Hall make Sterling Heights an excellent place to locate a business. We welcome Mitchell Plastics, and as a City, we will continue to work to be attractive to such incredible business investments.”
“Our automotive industry is being driven by innovation and creativity. Mitchell Plastics joins the world-class cluster of capabilities and assets here in Macomb County that have recently invested more than $5 billion dollars in our local economy,” said County Executive Mark Hackel. “Macomb County ranks third in the nation for manufacturing growth, and these investments are going to establish Macomb County as an epicenter for advanced manufacturing.”
