Most comprehensive sign language resource on the web
95% of all deaf and hard of hearing children are born to hearing parents and nearly everyone is born into families that do not know sign language or have any experience with raising and educating a deaf child. For the parents, their number one concern is “How do I communicate with my child?” followed by concerns with how will their child communicate with others, and what is the best way to raise and educate a deaf child.
With the goal to help educate people, co-founders Jillian Winn and John Miller created Signing Savvy, the most comprehensive sign language resource on the web, helping people learn American Sign Language (ASL) signs, finger spelled words, and other common signs online. Simply type in a word and you will be able to visually see and learn the sign, view different variations, and learn their meanings.
Like any language, the best way to learn is to immerse yourself with other native speakers or take a class. Signing Savvy felt parents needed a resource they could access quickly and easily and one that would work into the family of today’s busy and often hectic lifestyle. Bridging the gap between home and school, parents and teachers, on the child’s progress is an instrumental feature in Signing Savvy’s teaching solution.
Signing Savvy was started the way many bootstrap startups begin their journey - in the garage, literally. Video equipment was setup in the garage and they began recording signs with the hopes of creating a resource to help all people learn American Sign Language (ASL), but especially parents with deaf and hard of hearing children.
With now 22 million users Michigan has given Signing Savvy the opportunity to be in contact with local experts and receive advice to build their company into a world-wide business. “We have a lot of local reach with experts and people we trust to help us out,” said Jillian Winn.
“We’re proud that we started in Michigan and that our company now reaches people all over the world,” said Miller.
