$13,000 goal to secure matching grant through MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places initiative
Lansing, Mich. – The Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation today announced a new crowdfunding campaign through Michigan-based crowdfunding platform Patronicity. The campaign will support the installment of seven mosaic art works at Stoepel Park.
If the Mosaics in the Park project attains its crowdfunding goal of $13,000 by June 19, MEDC will provide a $13,000 matching grant. For project details and to donate, please visit: https://www.patronicity.com/project/mosaics_in_the_park#/.
“The installment of these mosaic art works not only enhances Stoepel Park, but also utilizes local talent,” said MEDC Community Development Director Katharine Czarnecki. “Hubert Massey has done impressive work throughout Detroit, the community will truly benefit from his artistic abilities.”
Stoepel Park is a 29 acre city park located between Grandmont Rosedale and Brightmoor neighborhoods. For the past two years, the park has been undergoing renovations to transform and enhance its appearance. Once this project is complete, the eight murals will be displayed on the walls of newly constructed masonry dugouts, substantially improving the park’s appearance.
“We built eight new dugouts, so we have eight blank walls,” said Tom Goddeeris, Executive Director at GRDC. “Last year, we put a mosaic on one of those walls and it was a great experience for the kids who were involved. It was a natural fit to want to do more.”
Before beginning work on the mosaics, Detroit-based artist Hubert Massey will engage with community members and park stakeholders to survey their ideas and designs for the mosaic art works. After ensuring he understands the vision of the community, Massey will begin work on the 200 square foot murals. With the donations of this campaign, and under the direction of Hubert Massey, Stoepel Park will have eight mosaic art works that attract visitors and reflect the community’s spirit.
