Mahindra locating off-road vehicle production in SE Michigan, adding 105 jobs

Mahindra Automotive North America Manufacturing is expanding in Auburn Hills and Pontiac with support from the Michigan Strategic Fund, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced today.

LANSING, Mich. – Mahindra Automotive North America Manufacturing is expanding in Auburn Hills and Pontiac with support from the Michigan Strategic Fund, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced today. The project, which includes bringing the company’s North American automotive headquarters and off-road vehicle manufacturing to Auburn Hills, is expected to generate a total capital investment of $22.3 million and create 105 jobs. 

“The fact that Mahindra has established new operations centers here for the third time in four years is a testament to Michigan’s global leadership in automotive R&D and advanced manufacturing,” said Lt. Gov. Brian Calley. “Mahindra’s success in Michigan communicates to international decision makers that our state holds great opportunities for growing their businesses. We thank Mr. Mahindra and his leadership team for their newest commitment to Michigan and to our strong partnership.”

Calley made his remarks this morning at the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new manufacturing and headquarters facility in Auburn Hills. 

Mahindra North American Technical Center, dba Mahindra Automotive North America Manufacturing, is a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra, Ltd., a multinational car manufacturing corporation. The company currently operates its North American Technical Center in Troy and manufactures its Gen-Ze scooter in Ann Arbor.

The company plans to retrofit two existing facilities in the cities of Auburn Hills and Pontiac in order to upgrade and increase its manufacturing and engineering capabilities. The Auburn Hills facility will be upgraded to serve as Mahindra’s North American automotive headquarters, engineering center, and manufacturing location of three models of off-road utility vehicles as well as prototype vehicles. At the Pontiac location, the company will lease and renovate a former General Motors facility into a warehousing and parts distribution center. 

The project is expected to generate total capital investment of nearly $22.3 million and create 105 jobs, resulting in an $850,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant. Michigan was chosen over competing sites in Alabama, Arizona, Indiana, North Carolina and Texas. 

“When an international company with a reach like Mahindra chooses Michigan for the third time in four years, that is a statement about our state’s business attractiveness, talented workforce, and leadership in automotive manufacturing,” said Jeff Mason CEO of MEDC, the state’s chief marketing and business attraction arm that administers programs and performs due diligence on behalf of the MSF.

“We’re pleased to support this global powerhouse as it further expands in Michigan and brings high-paying jobs to Michigan residents,” Mason said.
