Statewide program to develop downtowns gains momentum

MEDC names six communities with focus on attracting stakeholders, building local economies

LANSING, Mich. – Six Michigan communities will participate in the Michigan Main Street Program to develop downtowns throughout the state. The communities include Cheboygan, Dearborn, Dundee, Eaton Rapids, Kalkaska and Flat Rock.

“Michigan’s economy will only thrive if our downtowns are healthy and vibrant,” said Jeff Mason, CEO of MEDC. “The Michigan Main Street program creates opportunities for development and economic growth in downtowns across our state.”

The communities will take part in the Engaged Level, which provides a road map on how to engage stakeholders for the broad-based support. Additionally, communities learn the benefits and requirements of the Michigan Main Street program in order to advance to the Select Level. The Michigan Main Street program is part of the state’s efforts for downtown development in Michigan. These efforts are based on numerous studies showing that investment in downtowns creates vibrant and healthy communities, boosting the economic strength of the state.

Communities will officially be recognized as an Engaged Level Community once they participate in the Main Street Training Series and develop both a communications and fund development plan, which the communities above have completed.  Over this next year Michigan Main Street staff will work with each community to develop ways to foster the community support needed to have a successful program.  A community has up to three years to participate as an Engaged community working to implement their plans and apply to the Select Level.
