Gov. Whitmer Announces Support for 700+ New Jobs in Health Care, Mobility

New jobs come as part of broad actions by Michigan Strategic Fund Board providing holistic support to people, places, and projects

LANSING, Mich. – Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced support for several projects across Michigan that will create up to 723 new jobs and generate over $65 million in private investment combined. Additionally, the Michigan Strategic Fund Board supported over 850 new housing units combined across Pontiac, Lansing, and Detroit. 

“Today’s investments in Michigan health care and manufacturing will create more than 700 good-paying jobs and continue moving our economy forward,” said Governor Whitmer. “We are working across the aisle in Lansing and with our partners in communities across the state to keep growing some of our most critical industries. Together, we will create more jobs for workers, lower costs for businesses so they can expand in Michigan, and reinvest in our cities and towns to build them up and make them even better places to live, work, and invest. Let’s keep getting it done.”

Primary Care Company Establishes Headquarters, Creates Nearly 580 New Jobs in Livonia 

Overview: Pulse Primary Care, which provides medical services to patients across the nation, will create its headquarters in the City of Livonia (Wayne County) with the help of a $3.45 million performance-based Michigan Business Development Program grant. The project will create at least 579 new jobs and create a capital investment of at least $10.5 million. 

“The word is out — the Detroit Region is ideal for corporate headquarters because of our top talent, quality of life, and affordable business climate,” said Maureen Donohue Krauss, president and CEO, Detroit Regional Partnership. “Pulse Primary Care is a growing Michigan company. As they expand nationally, their decision to build a headquarters here is significant. It demonstrates to companies around the country that we can also attract the talent they need because the Detroit Region is not only great for business, it’s a fantastic place to live.” 

Why It Matters: The facility expects to serve as a technology hub and training center for continuous improvement of the company’s Care Managers, and in doing so, hopes to improve patient care and lower hospital admissions by treating patients sooner. The jobs associated with this project will range from $24 an hour up to $55 an hour, plus benefits, both of which are above the Regional Median Wage of $23.73 per hour.

Piston Automotive Expands in Detroit, Creates 144 New Jobs 

Overview: Piston Automotive, a subsidiary of automotive supplier Piston Group, LLC, will manufacture hydrogen fuel cells with the help of a $1.5 million performance-based Michigan Business Development Program grant to create up to 144 new jobs and invest up to $55 million in the City of Detroit (Wayne County). 

“Vinnie Johnson and the Piston Group bringing hydrogen fuel cell production to this facility puts Detroit at the forefront of zero-emissions fuel cell production,” said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan. “It also continues the transformation of the former State Fairgrounds into a major employment center that is providing thousands of great job opportunities for Detroiters.”  

Why It Matters: This project further bolsters Michigan, and especially Southeast Michigan, as a leader in the automotive and mobility industries, as well as the associated supply chain. It is estimated that nearly one-fifth of Michigan’s workforce is employed in the auto industry, either directly or indirectly. Supporting the industry helps to stabilize Michigan’s economy ensure Michigan families have a stable source of income.

Crawford County Receives Support for All-Seasons Road, Benefitting Two Major Projects in Grayling Township 

Overview: A proposed roadway known as Industrial Drive in Grayling Township (Crawford County) – that has been in development for over 20 years – will continue to advance in part through MSF approval of a $2.8 million Build Ready Site Program grant to the Crawford County Road Commission.  

"This road improvement will allow Saab Inc. the ability to move forward with their manufacturing facility. This results in the creation of 70 new full-time jobs. The Saab Inc. project is a substantial investment in themselves and the City of Grayling and Crawford County. The Site Readiness Grant, combined with MDOT's Economic Development Category A Grant, will upgrade Industrial Drive to an all-season route which is essential to this project's success,” said Donald Babcock, managing director of Crawford County Road Commission. “Therefore, it benefits employees, businesses, and citizens in the area. It is a prime example of this community’s efforts to promote growth through Industry. This project would not be feasible without the funding provided by MEDC's Site Readiness Grant.”  

Why It Matters: The funding, along with a $200,000 contribution from Stoops Freightliner-Western Star, provides critical matching dollars to leverage a $5 million Michigan Department of Transportation TEDF A Grant to provide all-season roads for two commercial projects under development: Stoops Freightliner-Western Star and Saab. With increasing commercial traffic and heavy truck traffic, the community will benefit from the completion of the roadway by providing safer routes and access points for commercial traffic to access I-75 quickly and easily without going through downtown Grayling.   

“Trucking is an essential component of our economy. At Stoops Freightliner-Western Star, we are excited about the Industrial Drive completion and our proposed new building located in Grayling. Our new dealership location will bring 40 new jobs in the future,” said David Shane, Vice President of Operations for Stoops Freightliner-Western Star. “Also, this economic development will facilitate more commercial and heavy truck traffic, which is vital to this region. Our customers, who are essential to our local and nationwide economies, will be able to safely access our dealership to purchase trucks, truck parts and have their trucks serviced.”  

The MSF Board previously provided support to Saab in September 2024 for a project that will create up to 70 jobs and result in a $75 million investment establishing an integration and assembly facility that will engineer and produce products for the U.S. military, further strengthening Michigan’s supply chain in the growing defense and aerospace industry.
