Cerberus Security has emerged as a leading provider of event-based security solutions. In 2017, Stephen Parent received multiple inquiries at his company, West Michigan K9, one of the leading canine providers in the state, about the potential of leasing dogs for security services. Stephen recognized the limitations of these arrangements, so he partnered with Tony Laskowicz to establish Cerberus Security and close this gap in the security space.
Cerberus Security grew rapidly in its initial phases. However, they struggled early on with finding the right people to hire. They have since turned to the Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to guide them with a leadership team and compensation planning. Stephen describes the SBDC as “one of the best resources a Michigan-based small business has at their disposal.” The SBDC offered Cerberus Security direction and advice that has been invaluable to the company’s success and has given Stephen and his team the confidence in progressing forward when making difficult business decisions and facing challenges head on.
For aspiring entrepreneurs embarking on their own ventures, Stephen offers this advice: “Utilize your resources wisely and recognize the value of seeking assistance. Entrepreneurial success is enabled by collaboration and resilience.” He explains that the SBDC continues to invest in his team’s success, extending the spirit of entrepreneurship all throughout.
Moving forward, Cerberus Security plans to continue working with the SBDC as they seek to continue expanding their service offerings and business operations nationwide. The SBDC will continue to help Stephen and his team with compensation and expansion planning, business plan development, and staffing needs.
Cerberus Security has been named the 2024 Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year by Michigan Celebrates Small Business, the largest small business award program in the state of Michigan. The company will be honored and recognized during the annual Awards Gala held in May during Small Business Month, joining one of the most prestigious cohorts of small businesses in the nation.
