What exactly is a Microsoft AI MVP and how did you become one?

A Microsoft AI MVP (Most Valuable Professional) is a recognition given to exceptional, independent community leaders who share their passion, technical expertise, and real-world knowledge of Microsoft products with others. About three years ago, I was deeply involved with Power BI (Business Intelligence) and wanted to be a Power BI MVP. During this hackathon I was participating in, I developed a project using AI to monitor rooms of people and read their body language. This innovative approach led my team at Microsoft to nominate me for the AI MVP award instead. Initially, I didn’t realize its significance, but as AI continues to grow in importance across various industries, this recognition now means a lot more to me.

You've worked extensively with AI in education and industry. How do you see AI impacting these sectors in Michigan?

AI has immense potential in both education and industry. In education, AI can provide instant feedback to students, helping them manage their time more efficiently and improve their learning outcomes. This prepares our future workforce for an AI-driven world. In industry, AI can enhance productivity and drive innovation, making Michigan a leader in technological advancements.

You've traveled and lived all over the world. What brought you to Holland, Michigan, and what do you love about living here?

I moved to Michigan due to opportunities in the automotive sector. I love the natural beauty of the area, especially being close to Lake Michigan. The forests and outdoor activities are incredible. Michigan offers a balanced lifestyle with professional opportunities without the intense competition of places like San Francisco. It's a leading state to live, work and play.

You are involved in local education initiatives in West Michigan. Can you tell us more about that?

I work with schools in West Michigan to show teachers and students how to use AI to enhance learning. For example, my son used AI to get instant feedback on his schoolwork, which helped him manage his time better across other schoolwork and extracurricular activities. I believe in fostering a love of learning and demonstrating the practical applications of AI in education.

Michigan's business ecosystem is known for its strong networks and support systems. How has your experience been with these networks?

The business ecosystem here is fantastic. I've been involved with various organizations, like the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce (APACC), which have significantly expanded my network. Through these connections, I've met incredible people and discovered the many support systems available in Michigan. This collaborative spirit and the interconnected networks here are a significant advantage for attracting and retaining businesses. It's been eye-opening to see how various groups work together to create a robust support system for professionals in the state.

What do you think makes Michigan a unique place for AI innovation?

Michigan has a unique advantage for AI innovation. We're not bogged down by the intense competition seen in other tech hubs. This environment allows us to embrace new technologies and drive AI transformation. The state's commitment to integrating AI in various sectors, from education to healthcare, positions us well for future growth.
