How did SafetyDecals get its start in Michigan?

Our roots go back to 1947 when my grandfather started making neon signs after World War II. I grew up in the business, and after graduating from Michigan State University, I returned to Ludington to take over. In 2009, we merged with SafetyDecals.com, which really kickstarted our growth.

What drove the transition from the family business to SafetyDecals?

We recognized that to survive, we needed to grow and specialize. Safety was becoming a major focus across industries, so we pivoted to meet that demand. It's been a steady climb since then. We've grown to a team of 25 and we're about to move into our third location right in Ludington.

How has SafetyDecals contributed to the local economy and community?

Beyond providing jobs, I’m deeply invested in Mason County. My wife Heather and I are involved in various community projects. I've been a volunteer firefighter and now I coach my 10 year old's hockey team. We believe in giving back to the community that's supported us. Mason County is full of people and businesses committed to local improvement.

What innovative approaches have you implemented to stay competitive?

We've positioned ourselves as a service company that happens to provide decals. We've developed custom ordering systems for major clients like United Airlines, Morbark, and Priority Waste. We guarantee same-day or next-day shipping for emergencies, and all our customers have direct access to me. This level of service and our ability to handle both vintage restorations and cutting-edge products sets us apart.

How far-reaching is SafetyDecals' impact?

Our products are everywhere – from airports and construction sites to fire trucks and gas stations across the country. We even produce election campaign signs, which becomes a significant part of our business every two to four years. It's remarkable to think that products made right here in Western Michigan are making their way around the world.

How has support from Michigan-based organizations aided your growth?

Michigan Celebrates Small Business has been a huge marketing win for us, both regionally and nationally. It's really helped showcase that we're a legitimate company with the knowledge and technology behind us. And the MEDC? They've been fantastic. I'm currently working with them on some expansion plans and new projects. This kind of support is invaluable when you're trying to grow. It's not just about the award - it's about separating ourselves from the million other decal companies out there and showing people we're the real deal.

What makes Michigan an ideal place for your business?

The business community here is unparalleled. There's a sense of camaraderie and willingness to help that you don't find everywhere. The communication and understanding among businesses make operations smoother. Plus, Michigan's location and infrastructure support our distribution needs perfectly.
