With international trade offices covering more than 90 markets, Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s International Trade team is committed to creating opportunities for businesses across Michigan to export their products around the world—from right here in Michigan.
MEDC’s International Trade program has a wealth of expertise and resources available to help Michigan businesses grow within the state and internationally. One of these many resources is Michigan’s State Trade Expansion Program or MI-STEP.
The program has three primary objectives:
- Increase the number of Michigan small businesses that export
- Increase the dollar value of Michigan exports
- Increase the number of Michigan small businesses exploring significant new trade opportunities
Through the program, eligible companies receive 75 percent reimbursement for export activities or up to $15,000 annually. Going beyond covering the costs of international travel, the MI-STEP grant can be used to support activities right from your home office, including:
- Marketing
- Compliance testing (ex: testing required for international certifications)
- Website upgrade or design
- Sample product shipping
- ExporTech and other export trainings
- U.S. Commercial Services
Studies show businesses that export report higher-than-average sales, employ more workers and pay higher wages. If you’re looking to break into the international market and expand your business, visit michiganbusiness.org/export or contact your international trade manager.
